Local Favorites: Ohio's Oldest Inn, a Broadway Bagel Shop, Smoked BBQ, a Heritage Railroad & a 311-Acre Lake Park in Lebanon

PLATE 15 · LOCAL FAVORITES, WEEK 15 · LEBANON, OHIO

This week we are heading to Warren County, and the city we are featuring is one of the fastest-growing communities in Greater Cincinnati. Lebanon, Ohio is the county seat, sitting about 30 minutes northeast of downtown Cincinnati, and the U.S. Census Bureau estimates its population has grown about 6% since the 2020 census, part of a county that led all of Ohio in growth between 2000 and 2020. It is a place where a 19th-century main street and brand-new neighborhoods share the same address.

From Ohio's oldest continuously operating inn, which has hosted a dozen United States presidents, to a beloved downtown bagel shop, from smoked barbecue on Mulberry Street to a heritage railroad rolling out of a Victorian station and a 311-acre county park built around a 110-acre lake, this week is all about the places that make Lebanon such a wonderful place to call home. Here are five local favorites worth a visit.

The Golden Lamb, Ohio's oldest continuously operating inn, a stately four-story early-1800s brick hotel on Broadway in Lebanon Ohio, with a white-columned portico, black shutters and an American flag by the entrance in warm golden-hour light with early-autumn maples

The Golden Lamb

Lebanon · Historic Downtown Broadway

On South Broadway, The Golden Lamb is Ohio's oldest continuously operating business and the state's oldest hotel. It began as a log tavern licensed in 1803, and the four-story brick inn that stands today was built in 1816 as a hotel and stagecoach stop on the road between Cincinnati and Dayton.

Twelve United States presidents have slept and dined here, along with Charles Dickens, Mark Twain, and Harriet Beecher Stowe, and every one of the 18 overnight rooms is named for a famous guest. The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner in rooms full of history, and in 2026 the family that has owned it for a century is still pouring the welcome. It is the heart of Lebanon, and a must-visit for anyone who loves American history with their meal.

The cozy interior of Broadway Bagels and Coffeehouse in Lebanon Ohio, a wooden counter with a matte espresso machine, baskets of fresh bagels in a glass case, and a latte with heart foam art in warm morning window light with exposed brick softly blurred behind

Broadway Bagels and Coffeehouse

Lebanon · Historic Downtown Broadway

Right on South Broadway, Broadway Bagels and Coffeehouse is the kind of independent shop locals choose over the chains. They bake fresh bagels daily with gourmet spreads and cream cheese, build breakfast and lunch sandwiches, and pull espresso drinks, lattes, teas, juices, and smoothies with an emphasis on quality, local ingredients.

It is a friendly, cozy gathering spot in the middle of Lebanon's historic district, open daily from 7 a.m., and the reviews keep coming back to the same thing: warm service and really good food. Grab a jalapeño bagel with veggie cream cheese and a latte, then wander the brick sidewalks of downtown Lebanon. It is the perfect way to start a day in this town.

A barbecue spread at Woodshed Smokehouse and Grille in Lebanon Ohio, a platter of smoked brisket, ribs and pulled pork with mac and cheese, baked beans and cornbread on a rustic wooden table with a glass of sweet tea in warm restaurant lighting

Woodshed Smokehouse and Grille

Lebanon · Mulberry Street

On East Mulberry Street, just off the downtown square, Woodshed Smokehouse and Grille is a casual smokehouse that bills itself as the best barbecue in Lebanon, and the locals largely agree. The kitchen turns out brisket, pulled pork, ribs, smoked chicken, and wings, served cafeteria-style with homestyle sides like baked beans, sweet potato casserole, corn pudding, and mac and cheese.

The tender brisket and burnt ends get the most love, the prices are fair, and weekend live music and a Tuesday open mic keep the room feeling like a neighborhood gathering. It is the kind of place where you order at the counter, find a seat under the wood beams, and leave full and happy. For a no-fuss, genuinely good dinner in Lebanon, Woodshed delivers.

The Lebanon Mason Monroe Railroad heritage train in Lebanon Ohio, a historic diesel locomotive pulling vintage green and cream 1930s open-window passenger coaches away from the Victorian-style station on a crisp early-autumn afternoon with golden leaves and turning trees

Lebanon Mason Monroe Railroad

Lebanon · South Street Station

From a replica Victorian-style station on South Street, the Lebanon Mason Monroe Railroad has been running heritage train rides since 1985, about six miles of track connecting Lebanon, Mason, and Monroe. Passengers ride in vintage 1930s open-window coaches pulled by a historic diesel locomotive, one of the oldest of its kind still operating.

The lineup runs from the standard scenic Turtle Creek Valley Flyer to themed excursions like the Pumpkin Express, the Easter Bunny Express, the Great Train Robbery, and even a Day Out With Thomas. It is the kind of family tradition that kids remember for decades, and it is right in Lebanon's backyard. If you are looking for a memorable afternoon, this is it.

Warren County Armco Park in Lebanon Ohio on a crisp early-autumn afternoon, a calm lake with a wooden dock, kayaks pulled up on the shore, families picnicking on the green lawn, and maples turning orange and gold around the shoreline

Warren County Armco Park

Lebanon · State Route 741

Just north of downtown on State Route 741, Warren County Armco Park spreads across 311 acres around a 110-acre lake. Originally developed by Armco Steel, the park is now a Warren County Park District gem, and locals have voted it one of the best parks in the county.

You can rent a kayak, canoe, or pontoon boat and paddle the lake, fish from the dock, play a round on the executive golf course or the 18-basket disc golf course, and let the kids loose on the nature-themed playground with its rope bridge and mounds. Add tennis, pickleball, sand volleyball, hiking trails, and picnic shelters with grills, and it is easy to spend an entire day here. In October, the shoreline turns gold and orange, and it is simply beautiful.

What Lebanon's Local Favorites Tell Us About Living Here

Ohio's oldest continuously operating inn, where a dozen presidents have dined. A downtown bagel shop that has become a daily ritual. Smoked brisket on Mulberry Street. A heritage railroad rolling out of a Victorian station. And a 311-acre county park wrapped around a 110-acre lake.

Five local favorites, all in a single growing city. That is the thing about Lebanon: it pairs one of the most beautifully preserved 19th-century main streets in Ohio with the momentum of one of the fastest-growing counties in the state. Between the historic downtown, the new neighborhoods, the schools, and the easy access to both Cincinnati and Dayton, it is a place where people build careers and raise families right next door to the good stuff.

Lebanon is also one of the strongest housing markets in Greater Cincinnati, a sign of just how much demand this Warren County community continues to draw. Add in the history, the dining, the train rides, and the lake, and it is easy to see why so many people choose to put down roots here.

That is the kind of community fabric we value at Glasshouse Realty. From Warren County to every neighborhood we serve across Ohio, we love helping people find the place where they feel at home. Knowing the historic inns, the bagel shops, the barbecue joints, the railroads, and the parks where everyone gathers is not just part of what we do, it is why we love this work.
