Local Favorites: Square-Side Steaks, a 1935 Burger Institution, Handcrafted Chocolates & Coffee, a Free Historic Mansion & an 80-Acre Nature Preserve in Troy
This week we are heading to Miami County, and the city we are featuring is the county seat and one of Greater Dayton's steady growers. Troy, Ohio sits about 20 miles north of downtown Dayton right on I-75, and the U.S. Census Bureau estimates its population has grown from 26,345 at the 2020 census to about 27,344 residents by July 1, 2025, an increase of roughly 3.8 percent over five years. It is a regional economic hub, home to major employers like Hobart food-service equipment and Honda's parts distribution center, and it pairs that momentum with one of the most charming historic downtowns in the Miami Valley.
From a steakhouse right on the historic public square to a hamburger institution that has been grilling since 1935, from a downtown coffee and chocolate shop to a free 1914 mansion turned cultural center and an 80-acre nature preserve, this week is all about the places that make Troy such a wonderful place to call home. Here are five local favorites worth a visit.
The Caroline
Troy · Historic Public Square
At 5 South Market Street, right on Troy's historic public square, The Caroline is the kind of restaurant that anchors a downtown. It serves classic American fare, from Certified Angus steaks and burgers to seafood, salads, sandwiches, and homemade soups, with a full bar and a warm, polished room that feels special without being stuffy.
It sits inside Troy's DORA district, so on nice evenings guests can take a drink out and enjoy the square. Reviews keep praising the friendly service and the cozy, inviting atmosphere, and locals count on it for date nights, celebrations, and dinners that feel like an occasion. If you want to see what downtown Troy has become, start with dinner here.

K's Hamburger Shop
Troy · East Main Street
At 117 East Main Street, K's Hamburger Shop is a genuine piece of Ohio history. It opened on July 31, 1935, during the Great Depression, and it has been serving nearly continuously ever since, closing in on 90 years. The burgers are still griddled the same way they were in the 1930s, on a wet grill, and the homemade soups, frosted malts, and all-day breakfast keep a loyal following coming back.
Step inside and you are stepping back in time, with red booths, a vintage counter, and the same Depression-era cooking that made it famous. It is often called the best burger in Miami County, and once you have had one, you will understand why. It is the kind of small, family-run institution you simply cannot replicate.

Winans Coffee & Chocolate
Troy · Downtown West Main Street
At 10 West Main Street, just a stone's throw from the square, Winans Coffee & Chocolate is the kind of shop that makes a downtown feel alive. The family company was founded in 1961 in nearby Piqua, reviving a confectionery tradition that goes back five generations, and it still makes its chocolates and roasts its own coffee. The Troy shop brings both together under one roof.
Grab a latte and a few handmade chocolates, or pick up a box of Buckeyes as a gift. The baristas are friendly, the room is warm and welcoming, and regulars call it their favorite stop in town. It is the perfect morning or afternoon pause while you wander downtown Troy.

Troy-Hayner Cultural Center
Troy · West Main Street Historic District
At 301 West Main Street, next to the Miami County Courthouse, the Troy-Hayner Cultural Center lives in a 1914 Tudor-Romanesque mansion built for Mary Jane Hayner, the widow of the Hayner Distillery founder. And here is the best part: admission to the mansion and its exhibits is free.
Inside you will find historic furnishings, works of art, a Victorian doll house, and a permanent exhibition on the Pre-Prohibition Hayner Distillery Company, along with rotating art and history exhibits, concerts, classes, and family programs all year long. It is a beautiful building, a free community resource, and one of Troy's great hidden gems.

Hobart Urban Nature Preserve
Troy · Tyrone Road, off Dorset Road
At 1400 Tyrone Road, Hobart Urban Nature Preserve is Miami County Park District's green escape inside Troy city limits, just over 80 acres with more than two miles of trails. It opened in 2007 and winds through prairie grasses and wetlands, past a three-acre wildlife pond and four welded steel sculptures donated from the Hobart Welding Institute collection.
It is a wonderful place for a quiet walk, bird-watching, a photo session, or a picnic, and in October the prairie turns gold while the maples blaze orange and red. It is free, it is peaceful, and it is proof that Troy can balance growth with open green space.
